Contact your local Independent Living Center directly to find out if they accept donations or have equipment available.

Mobility challenges can turn everyday tasks into major obstacles. That was true for Ana, who recently reached out to the Silicon Valley Independent Living Center (SVILC) for support. Persistent leg pain made it hard for her to walk long distances, limiting her ability to stay active and involved in daily routines. To maintain her independence, she needed a mobility device that could help her move safely and comfortably.

When she reached out to SVILC, AT Coordinator/IL Services Supervisor Joe stepped in to help. Their team had recently received a donated power wheelchair, and they immediately thought of her. Knowing that mobility devices aren’t one-size-fits-all, they set up a demonstration so she could try it out in person.

At the demo, she was introduced to two options: the donated power wheelchair and a smaller motorized scooter. This hands-on session gave her the chance to explore how each device worked, ask questions, and figure out which one felt right. She took her time comparing the size, maneuverability, and comfort of both options—something that’s critical when making a decision that directly affects daily life.

She ended up choosing the power wheelchair.

To get it home, she rented a hitch and received some additional support from the SVILC team to make the transition smooth. Now equipped with a mobility device that works for her, she’s able to move around more freely and reclaim parts of her routine that had become difficult or impossible.

This story is just one example of how access to the right assistive device—whether new or gently used—can remove barriers and support independence.
