AT Advocates are community based information and referral specialists who can assist consumers with a variety of assistive technology issues. They work at Independent Living Centers in California.\u00a0 Ability Tools wouldn\u2019t be the program it is without these advocates and all their hard work. With the New Year approaching we asked our advocates to tell us what new technology they are looking forward to trying in the 2018 year.<\/p>\n

Snow S \u2013 4.7 in. HD \u2013 Handheld Video Magnifier<\/p><\/div>\n

“I have recently began working with a consumer in search of a versatile magnifier to meet her needs. On her wish list she mentioned she wants it to be compact and discreet to carry with her wherever she goes. In addition she is looking for something that will assist her with reading her school work and assignments both at home and in class. After some research I was able to locate the Snow S – 4.7 in. HD – Handheld Video Magnifier which I look forward to having the opportunity to purchase and DEMO for her through an AT grant for 2018. This device allows a user some flexibility because it is small enough to be handheld and used on the go for daily tasks like reading pill bottles, business cards, price tags etc.. In addition it can be connected to a user\u2019s TV that can come in handy for school or work projects as well in the comfort of the user\u2019s own home<\/em>.” – Michelle Rosado, Disability Resource Agency for Independence\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Humanware Victor Reader Trek<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201c The Independent Living Center of Kern County will have the opportunity to provide training’s\u00a0to people with low vision and\/ or blindness on the new Humanware Victor Reader Trek. I am looking forward to trying out and training individuals on these new pieces of technology available at our center\u201d. –\u00a0<\/em>David Hendrickson, Independent Living Center of Kern County\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dragon Naturally Speaking<\/p><\/div>\n

“Our center just acquired several licensed software packages with the current Dragon technology. We are looking forward to trying out and training this current generation of speech recognition technology.\u00a0<\/em>Our center\u2019s catchment area includes two counties that\u00a0<\/em>just experienced the 2nd largest wildfire\u00a0in California history. There were massive evacuations. So we are keen on evacuation devices. We are looking forward to trying out and training other agencies on the Disabled Passenger Transfer Sling (when it becomes available).” – James Cencer, Independent Living Resource Center\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
