It is a way of looking at society and a worldwide movement of people with disabilities who work towards self-determination, self-respect, and <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2737\" src=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gardening-accessible-297x300.jpg\" alt=\"Women using an accessible plow with two handles making it easier for people that have issues bending over\" width=\"241\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gardening-accessible-297x300.jpg 297w, https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gardening-accessible-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/gardening-accessible.jpg 479w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/>equity. While taking care of each other, individuals living with a disability want to learn how to be in control and be self-sufficient. They work through the barriers that they face with their disabilities to find their way to success. Community participation and advocacy are also active points in the IL community.<\/p>\n<p>The culture of farming is not too different with self-sufficiency as one of its pillars. Rural communities are characterized by solid family values, working hard, caring for each other, mutual family contribution, and being committed to the community. Many rural residents grew up or are working in a farm. AgrAbility is a nationwide program that assists farmers and farm workers experiencing disability to help them find solutions to continue working in agriculture safely. AgrAbility can provide education on assistive devices such as lifts that can enable farmers to continue working independently.<\/p>\n<p>The Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living (APRIL) is a membership organization consisting of members from the Centers for Independent Living, the Statewide Independent Living Councils, and other organizations and <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2740\" src=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ed-Bell_National-AgrAbility-Photo-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Man using a motorized transfer\/lift chair to lift him into the tractor seat\" width=\"483\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ed-Bell_National-AgrAbility-Photo-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ed-Bell_National-AgrAbility-Photo-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Ed-Bell_National-AgrAbility-Photo-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/>individuals concerned with challenges of people living with disabilities in rural America. APRIL\u2019s vision is to be a unified voice of independent living across states. APRIL and AgrAbility are working together to connect these \u201cCan Do!\u201d communities.<\/p>\n<p>Join California AgrAbility (CalAgrAbility), Ability Tools, and APRIL on October 5<sup>th<\/sup> for a webinar that will focus on connecting the IL community with AgrAbility to serve rural Californians living with disabilities.
