Each ILC has AT Advocates on staff.\u00a0 They are community based, information and referral specialists who can assist consumers with a variety of assistive technology issues. They work at Independent Living Centers in California.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/services-map-screen-shot.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2183\" src=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/services-map-screen-shot.png\" alt=\"Services map showing where all of California's ILC's are located \" width=\"356\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/services-map-screen-shot.png 642w, https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/services-map-screen-shot-246x300.png 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 356px) 100vw, 356px\" \/><\/a> AT Advocates can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide information on assistive technology<\/li>\n<li>Provide referrals to qualified AT professionals for evaluations, assessments and training<\/li>\n<li>Help locate vendors, services and funding resources<\/li>\n<li>Make outreach and community education presentations<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;and much more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To learn more about Ability Tools\u2019 Independent Living Centers, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/abilitytools.org\/services\/independent-living-centers.php\">http:\/\/abilitytools.org\/services\/independent-living-centers.php<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Submitted by Access to Independence (A2I), San Diego CA<\/h2>\n<p>Angelica Gomez has been a consumer of <a href=\"http:\/\/accesstoindependence.org\/\">Access to Independence<\/a> for several years.\u00a0 She had worked with Ruben Ceballos on housing resources because she is currently homeless.\u00a0 In addition to being homeless in San Diego, she had a badly damaged manual wheelchair that had front wheels that almost prevented her <a href=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MsGomez-success-story-e1485800146233.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2179 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MsGomez-success-story-e1485800146233-225x300.png\" alt=\"Photo of Ms. Gomez sitting and smiling in her new scooter \" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MsGomez-success-story-e1485800146233-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/abilitytools.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MsGomez-success-story-e1485800146233.png 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>from going in a straight direction.\u00a0 It would take her a long time and great effort to get around and this was especially true when getting on and off the MTS Trolley or Bus. It actually became dangerous for her.<\/p>\n<p>After contacting John Gray at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptforall.org\/\">Physical Therapy for All<\/a>, a donated used electric scooter was located and made available to Angelica with the help of Ruben and Assistive Technology Service Coordinator Tom Riis.\u00a0\u00a0 Arrangements were made for all involved to meet at Access to Independence Mission Valley office to get the scooter to Angelica and train her in its safe use since she had not used a power chair before.\u00a0\u00a0 Angelica said \u201cThis scooter is a life saver for me.\u00a0 Now I can get around to appointments and to search for permanent housing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with San Diego Access to Independence, the Ability Tools Southern California will have an in-person presentation about A2I\u2019s programs with an emphasis on the Assistive Technology Program as well as the Older Individuals Who Are Blind (OIB) Program on Tuesday, February 28th in San Diego, CA.
