George Miller (D-Martinez), House Resolution 1759 declares the House\u2019s support for a national&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: normal;\">\u201cEd Roberts Day\u201d<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">&nbsp;to be held on <\/span>January 23<sup>rd<\/sup><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">. &nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\">\u201cEd Roberts was a ground breaking leader who helped galvanize the disability rights movement around the fundamental idea that all people should have the opportunity to pursue education, go to work and live in the community,\u201d said Sheri Burns, Chair of the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers.<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\">\u201cAs we recognize Ed\u2019s lifetime of leadership in the Disability Rights Movement we remain committed to continuing his work by advocating for access, equality, and full inclusion of people with disabilities.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\">In addition to supporting the establishment of&nbsp;<em>Ed Roberts Day<\/em>, Miller\u2019s legislation acknowledges the accomplishments Roberts made in helping reduce barriers, increase access and improve lives for persons with disabilities.<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\">Roberts, who passed away in 1995, was the first student with significant disabilities to attend UC Berkeley, where he began advocacy efforts and helped found the nation\u2019s first student-driven disabled students program. Roberts founded the Independent Living Center in Berkeley, directed the California Department of Rehabilitation and was a key leader in the national disability rights movement.&nbsp;Roberts later co-founded and became the President of the World Institute on Disability.<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;\">The full text of H Res 1759 is&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/georgemiller.house.gov\/media\/EDRobertsFinal_xml.pdf\" style=\"color: #04107c; text-decoration: none;\">here<\/a>.
